The remarkable actor Jack Lord was born December 30, 1920 and he was given the most unusual name of John Joseph Patrick Ryan, in today's society they all could be used as a first name; "Ryan" became a popular first name in the 1960's. Jack Lord was the son of a hard working Irish-American steam freighter executive named William Lawrence Ryan, and an Irish-American mother, Josephine O'Brien, who was the Irish matriarch of the family, she had five children with William, four boys and one girl. Jacks mother owned a farm north of New York City; it was here on this fruit farm that Jack developed a great equestrian skill with horses, his first horse was a beautiful chestnut mare which he loved dearly. He would ride that horse up and down the Hudson River Valley where his mother’s fruit farm was located. Jack had an early career at sea as well as an older teenager he started spending summers at sea, and from the decks of cargo ships that he was working on he would sketched and painted the exotics landscapes he encountered from China to the warm sunny Mediterranean. Much later as an enlistment in the Merchant Marine he was in the Merchant Marines both before and also during World War II, Jack had a wonderful artist talent both in drawing and also painting; he majored in Fine Arts and was top of his class at New York University.
